Wisconsingrass Roots Network
Communications/Organizer
Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
A bit about me. I have a IT and Health Care background. I was a Medical Laboratory Tech for 15 years and I worked in various capacities in IT for 12 years. I was a C programmer on the State of Wisconsin’s Medicaid Information Management System for over a decade. So I have very strong database and C, pl/sql and pro-C skills. I’ve programmed in VB and a bit in .Net. Since my layoff in 2009 everything I’ve learned in building websites, using twitter, FB and other social media has been self-taught and utilized in my activism. I’ve built the website for my grassroots group in Nation Builder (www.wisconsingrassroots.net/ )and I’m currently moving it to a word press site. I’m also in the process of creating a media presence for the Progressive Caucus of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, I am the co-vice chair. I’ve been using twitter, face-book and other social media tools since the 2011 Wisconsin Uprising. I occupied Freedom Plaza in 2011 traveling from Wisconsin to DC with the Wisconsin Wave. First and foremost I consider myself an activist. Over the past year I did voluntary work and on the ground activism with the Center for Popular Democracy, Demand Justice, Housing Works, Code Pink, Bird dog Nation, National Nurses United ( Medicare for All text banking, the Bernie Sanders Campaign ( I was a 2016 delegate ), AFSCME Local 1871 ( my husband is the president ), Women’s March Wisconsin ( mainly in the form of attending their events), Wisconsin’s Solidarity Sing Along ( 8 years) and the Wisconsin Grassroots Network. This year I’m trying to bring up three websites. I know there are holes in my education to make these sites and their associated social media effective. The third site would be for SantasWithoutChimneys, a Madison, WI based group that collects, wraps and delivers gifts for children who don’t have a permanent home. From my experiences I know I could use some training to be more effective on social media particularly during COVID19. I think this training could help me in all of my efforts. I’m willing to give my time, energy and skills to supporting grassroots groups and progressive issues but I would like to be more effective in doing so. I see my biggest weaknesses in graphics & online organizing during COVID19. I’d also like to up my game a bit in twitter. I’ve been effective in helping to turn out people for events but I believe I'd do better with more training. I love making new connections in the activist world. For those reasons I'm really looking forward to attending this conference to expand both my skills and network.
